Being Croatia's second-largest city, Split is a great place to experience the Dalmatian way of life. Always buzzing, this exuberant city has just the right balance of tradition and modernity.
Set amongst dramatic coastal mountains and aqua turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea, Split has its own unique beauty. You can step inside Diocletian’s Palace (which is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world’s most impressive Roman monuments) or explore dozens of bars, restaurants and shops which are thriving amid the atmospheric old walls, where Split life has been humming along for thousands of years.
Fans of the hit HBO series ‘Game of Thrones’ will also love the fact that some of the series’ scenes were filmed around this region. One of the best spots where the programme was filmed is inside the ruins where you can see the location here Daenerys keeps her dragons in the series. The show also shot some of its exterior shots along the coastline here too!
Split is now a major economic hub of the Eastern Adriatic shoreline. From the increased impact of tourism over the past years, many new hotels are being built and other large scale projects are taking place. The city is so popular as it has a great climate all year, and it has earned the nickname of ‘Europe’s Mediterranean Flower’ by its locals.
There’s so much to do in the city. Why not try island hopping to the nearby islands of Hvar, Solta or Brac? After all, there’s plenty of sunshine to go around for a day of island hopping. You can also take a walking tour of the old ruins or walk to the top of Majan Hill to grab great birds-eye views over the city if that’s your thing. If all else fails though, this city has some great food and wine so it’s hard not to fall in love with it and never want to leave at all...
