HAPPINESS IS A CULTURE

Writer's picture: Charlotte DykesCharlotte Dykes

I was thinking in ways to describe Bali in Indonesia and the word that always came back into my mind was happiness. The spirits of the people there truly are happy at heart. I don’t think I ever saw a miserable person for the entire time that I was exploring out there.

Bali is a place of humidity, spectacular scenery and some of the biggest spiders I have ever seen (I’m not joking!). The culture was totally different to back home. Their way of life moves at a slower, more meaningful way, like everything they do in their day is for the good of others. It’s a shame that we don’t adapt some of their cultural habits…

I visited three main spots in Bali - Canggu, Ubud and Kuta. Each completely different from one another. Canggu is a great place to visit the temples such as Tanah Lot from, as it is only around a 30minute car journey away from there. It is also on the coast, which means it has fantastic beaches. Some of the best bars are located on the beach and you can capture great views of the sunset from around there.

Ubud, is more centrally located. It is in mainland Bali and is surrounded by tropical rainforests which are home to mesmerising waterfalls and traditional rice fields. It’s a great place to really delve deep into the culture of the country. Ubud is also the place to try and grab a bargain at their local markets, they're some of Bali’s best and who could forget the monkey forest! It’s a must visit.

Kuta, similar to Canggu, is famous for its surf culture and shopping scene. This is the place to learn to surf if you fancy a shot at being the next pro surfer! The area also has more of a city vibe so it’s a great place to go if you want a mix of both culture and a traditional holiday atmosphere.

In each of these places or wherever you choose to visit in Bali, I guarantee that you’ll be left with a smile on your face, because happiness IS truly infectious…
