AFRICA'S SIDEKICK

I’ve visited this island more than ten times, and there’s a good reason why. Fuerteventura was my childhood holiday destination. Each year we’d visit this incredible island every summer and I remember it being filled with crystal white sand, black rock landscapes and palm trees galore.
The semi-desert Island of Fuerteventura is located just 100km from the coast of Africa where it nears the border of Morocco and the Western Sahara. The island forms a part of the Canary Islands, and it’s the longest island of them all - but this still only measures just shy of 100 km from North to South!
It’s now famous for its beaches, as 50km of stunning coastline surrounds the island, attracting holiday makers in their dozens. If you head inland, you start to realise how close to Africa this island really is. Rocky desert plains combined with sparse rainfall and left-overs from century old volcanic eruptions make for a truly spectacular backdrop.
Whitewashed Spanish villages are dotted around the island, bringing life and culture to this Mediterranean paradise. There’s really something for everything here. The Island offers great Surfing, Windsurfing and Kite Surfing as well as diving with its bohemian style vibe. You can also party hard in some great nightlife spots such as Caleta de Fuste or just relax on a beach in Corralejo or Jandia.
One thing’s for sure though, you’ll definitely come back from this place refreshed, relaxed and rejuvenated – but maybe a tad hungover…
